Objective 11
Demonstrate an understanding of and facility in addressing ethical standards
DEFINITION AND EXPLANATION:
All teachers should be aware of and understand ethical standards. That includes ethical behavior towards students, parents, and fellow colleagues, as well as the community and school district in general. Teachers are held to high standards, given the responsibility of being a daily influence on students, being strong and positive role-models, and providing quality education to all students. I believe ethical standards for educators also includes demonstrating moral professionalism, which encompasses coming to work on time, dressing appropriately and being prepared for immediate instruction and leadership, and showing a positive attitude and good character.
ARTIFACT:
To demonstrate my understanding of and facility in addressing ethical standards I have chosen to include the American Association of Educators Code of Ethics for Educators. It includes four principles: Ethical Conduct toward Students, Ethical Conduct toward Practices and Performance, Ethical Conduct toward Professional Colleagues, and Ethical Conduct toward Parents and Community. Using this code of ethics and my own beliefs about ethical standards for educators, I have written a summary explanation to accompany the AAE Code of Ethics for Educators. Please CLICK on the button below to access the code and summary explanation.

Objective 12
Conduct and commit to on-going professional development in areas of content knowledge
DEFINITION AND EXPLANATION:
Continuing professional development is a vital part of being an educator. I believe it is necessary to keep well-informed on new and/or improved strategies and teaching practices, as well as becoming more knowledgeable in the content area and subject matter. I have a bachelor degree in middle childhood education with concentrations in social studies, language arts, and reading because those are my own personal passions and I wish to share and nurture that passion in my students. Being involved in online communities built for educators is also very important, and many sites built for educators offer free professional development via workshops, videos, and webinars (web conferencing). In addition to regular professional development courses, I also plan to continue my professional education by earning a master degree in Reading/Literacy. I believe it is important that teachers of all disciplines embrace and commit to the instruction of literacy.
ARTIFACTS:
As my artifacts for this objective I have chosen three very useful and informative websites; Education World, Education Week, and Annenberg Learner. Education World is a great resource for teachers that does not require an account setup and all of its features are available at no cost. The site includes lesson plans and activities, technology: resources, archives, and materials, professional development programs, and a free subscription to the newsletter. There is also an Education World Community where educators and administrators can discuss and converse in online forums and blogs. Education Week is another great site, but requires the user to create an account. Creating an account is free, however, and gives the user access to a multitude of resources and information pertaining to the continuing professional development of educators. The user can sign up for online workshops and webinars which include subjects such as The Common Core State Standards, Teacher-Leadership Trends, and Digital Media in the Classroom. The Annenberg Learner website is almost completely dedicated to educator professional development. This site offers hundreds of videos, workshops, and courses on professional development, including lesson plans, blogs, and interactive activities for almost all disciplines and grade levels. Regularly visiting these types of sites keeps me well informed on the current issues, practices, and trends in education, and participating in the webinars and professional development courses will ensure that I will keep developing and growing as a teacher.
